Apple's iPad :A Revolution in Personalize Computing


Apple Inc. unveiled a tablet computer named 'iPad' to revolutionized personal computing. Priced at $499, the device features a 10-inch touchscreen, with 3G data and a custom ARM processor instead of the previously considered Intel Atom processor. It will be positioned in that empty spot between smartphone and laptop in Apple's product line.

Similar to modern netbooks in design and scope, the iPad is projected to enter the same bloated netbook market with Apple’s high end design (it’s expected appearance looks like a large iPhone), functionality (OS X for its operating system).

According to Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs,”The iPad can display full Web pages, books and iPhone applications, and has a touch-screen keyboard that’s almost full size.” A 16-gigabyte version will sell for $499, while a 32-gigabyte model costs $599.

With its "communication enabled" operating system, the data can be faxed, e-mailed, beamed via infrared or sent to a desktop computer or printer. It is also convenient for voice, video and other advanced technologies when they become available.

Its price is 50 percent lower than the other netbooks. “At that price, they’ll sell millions,” said Hakim Kriout, a portfolio manager at New York-based Grigsby & Associates, which owns Apple shares. “It’s very, very affordable for what it does. This is going to add a huge revenue stream for Apple.”



The device, made of aluminum and glass, can display maps from Google Inc., and has calendar and address-book functions. It also lets users display thumbnail views of photos. The iPad has a 1-gigahertz chip that was custom designed by Apple and battery life of 10 hours, Jobs said.

The device supports Wi-Fi communications and runs the more than 140,000 applications already available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It also works with wireless service from AT&T Inc., the U.S. carrier for the iPhone, though no contract is required.

Apple said there will be two iPad wireless data plans from AT&T in the U.S. One will cost $14.99 and give users up to 250 megabytes of data downloads. The other will have unlimited data and cost $29.99. The company is also working on international wireless plans.

Apple Announcement On for January 27th

In what comes as no surprise to many of us, Apple made it official today announcing to thr press that it will be unveiling its newest offering live on January 27th in San Francisco.

It is not yet clear that what Apple has in mind for the event .Whether the device will be a tablet, a new iPhone, new iPod Touch or something completely different remains to be seen, and Apple’s still being very tight lipped about it.



According to report on Wall Street Journal that device will come with 10 or 11 inch touch screen with wireless access and the price tag may range up to $1,000. The other rumors are still in the air that device would 22 inch wide.

The announcement about the January 27th event came in the form of an e-mail to journalists.

Let’s start counting the days.

Apple intros new MobileMe app - Gallery

Apple has introduced a new MobileMe-related App for the iPhone and iPod touch, dubbed Gallery (App Store -Free).

This lets MobileMe users access their image galleries, including those that are password protected and also hidden albums, lets users view friends’ gallery photos and movies, access previously viewed photos offline, and share links to albums directly from the iPhone. It supports flick and pinch-to-zoom gestures though it requires a MobileMe account.

“You can create a new album or make changes to your gallery at me.com from virtually anywhere. Easily upload new photos, rearrange them, edit titles, and more. Your changes are instantly reflected in your gallery for friends to see. Have a Mac? You can upload photos directly from iPhoto ’09 or Aperture 2 with just a few clicks. And if you snap a picture on the road or capture video using your iPhone 3GS, you can post it directly to your gallery with a few taps,” Apple explains.



The company adds: “The free MobileMe Gallery app lets you view all the photos and movies published in your gallery with a tap. All your albums are beautifully displayed and easy to browse using simple pinch and flick gestures. If there's a photo you want to share, tap to email a link. The MobileMe Gallery app lets you enjoy friends' photos, too. Just add other MobileMe members to your Friends list and view their galleries as easily as you view your own.”

It is also possible to allow friends to contribute their photos using a browser or via email.

The Gallery app is free for MobileMe members and available now on the App Store in iTunes. MobileMe Gallery also works with Apple TV.

Apple App Store Has Lost $450 Million To Piracy

Apple and the companies that sell software for the iPhone and iPod touch at the App Store have lost over $450 million to piracy since the store opened in July 2008 according to an analysis by 24/7 Wall St. There have been over 3 billion applications downloaded since the App program began. Bernstein analyst, Toni Sacconaghi, estimated that between 13% and 21% of those downloads are from paid applications. According to this analysis, the average price of an application purchased at the App Store is $3. Sacconaghi estimated that Apple’s revenue from the App Store is between $60 million and $110 million per quarter. That amount has certainly increased since this research report was published because of the rapid growth of the number of applications.

However, behind all this success lies an insidious force that has plagued the music, software, and movie industry for decades. Developers of iPhone applications have reported alarming piracy rates for their software, and the ease with which users may obtain pirated versions of paid applications for free is only increasing. The total number of applications available at the store, including those which are free and those which require payment, is in excess of 100,000.

Anyone who is familiar with the iPhone is likely to know that these phones can be “jailbroken” or, to use the more common term “unlocked”. Jailbreaking an iPhone modifies the OEM Apple iPhone OS. This allows the user to circumvent the limitations put on the phone by Apple. Apart from the ability to modify the OS itself to allow for customizing of icons, backgrounds, functionality and processes, a jailbroken iPhone permits the installation of applications from sources other than the iTunes store. It is even possible to use an unlocked phone for access to carrier services other than AT&T and the Apple-assigned retailers outside the US. The great majority of iPhones sold in China are unlocked and Apple partner, China Unicom , have only begun to sell locked phones in the last three months

Most iPhone users have not jailbroken their phones. This is likely a result of the perception that this process is incredibly technical for many non-tech savvy owners. Others may fear that Apple might retaliate. No rabid Apple fanatic would risk being placed on a DO NOT SELL list! However, the technical barriers to jailbreaking an iPhone or iPod touch are rapidly decreasing. The original process required at least some programming ability. The most recent jailbreak software makes the process accessible to even most Luddites, so the number of jailbroken iPhones will only increase.

Apple Launched RSS feed for iPhone News

Apple this week has taken another step toward better communicating with iPhone developers, launching an RSS feed for iPhone app news.

News subscribers will receive the latest Apple App Store submission tips, such as the importance of App name and icon consistency, plus data on App Store submission approvals, program updates and testing techniques.

Apple said in November that iPhone developers have created more than 100,000 apps for smartphones and market research firm IDC says there will be 300,000 by 2011. Apple roared past the 2 billion app download mark in September. Yet Apple has been knocked by App Store developers and buyers for imperfect management of the App Store submission and oversight processes.

Some developers have argued that Apple makes it too tough for them to get their apps onto the App Store, such as when Apple rejected a Google Voice app earlier this year. Others decry apps like the notorious Shaken Baby app that slip onto the App Store. Then there’s the recent scandal involving bogus iPhone app ratings that led Apple to scuttle 1,000 previously approved apps.

Buyers have complained about a “no refund” policy that makes plunking down increasingly higher amounts for apps a tougher purchase decision.

The new RSS feed is Apple’s latest attempt to get a better handle on its booming App Store. The company recently introduced ways for developers to gain more visibility into exactly where a submitted app stands in the process.

While Apple’s App Store is in a league of its own, other smartphone makers, such as Windows Mobile maker Microsoft, are boosting theirs as well.

Apple Opens iTunes LP & iTunes Extras

Apple has opened up iTunes LP and iTunes Extras, publishing Templates, Best Practices and a Development Guide so that anyone has the capability to create interactive content that can be played back in iTunes 9 or on Apple TV.



    * iTunes LP lets you create digital albums that include links to listen to album songs and view lyrics, liner notes, photos and videos (such as artist interviews).
    * iTunes Extras is designed to present a movie with interactive menus, bonus content, and chapter navigation, similar to those supplied by DVD or Blu-ray authors.


Apple has also published information on testing and delivering the new formats.

Motorola passes Apple in brand loyalty among men - study

Motorola has exceeded Apple in brand loyalty among men ages 18-and-up since the launch of its new Droid handset, but the iPhone maker has remained well ahead of competitor BlackBerry, according to one study.


According to new, daily tracking statistics from YouGov's BrandIndex, Apple dropped from a peak score of 48.1 in the month of November to a score of 22 last week. That took it below Motorola, which remained relatively static from its month-long peak of 32.3, finishing last week with a score of 29.3.

The study's scale ranges from -100 to 100, based on interviews conducted with 5,000 people each weekday from a representative U.S. population sample. YouGov conducts more than 1.2 million interviews per year, selected from an online panel of more than 1.5 million unique individuals. The study has a margin of error of +/- 2 percent.




The company said its survey demonstrates that Motorola has likely come out on top of the ongoing advertising dispute between Verizon and AT&T.

"Motorola has seen its brand loyalty unaffected by AT&T's lawsuits against Verizon Wireless and ad war bashing," YouGov said. "But it seems to have taken a toll on Blackberry, which has withered under all the Droid/iPhone marketing and hype."

This week, Apple indirectly joined the dispute with two new ads that tout features available only on AT&T's UMTS/GSM network. The advertisements debuted after the most recent study results from YouGov were released; any potential impact from the ads likely wouldn't be seen for weeks.

It's a similar story to earlier this month, when Verizon's brand perception soared while AT&T sunk in the 18- to 34-year-old target demographic. The study suggested that Verizon and Motorola's advertising campaign for the Droid, which launched on Oct. 18, proved effective. Those ads, along with network-specific TV spots from Verizon, directly targeted both Apple's iPhone and AT&T's coverage.

Apple And Android Dominate U.S. Smartphone Web Traffic

It is starting to look like just two smartphone platforms "matter" where it comes to use of the mobile Web: the Apple iPhone and the Android devices, a new analysis by AdMob suggests.

AdMob’s October, 2009 measurements show that the iPhone/iPod Touch and Android phones account for 75 percent of mobile Web traffic in the United States.



Apple devices continue to dominate, with 55 percent share, but Android users in October represented 20 percent of all activity, up from 17 percent in September, 2009.

The iPhone and iPod Touch grew their share from 48 percent to 55 percent share over the same period.

The Blackberry ’s mobile Web traffic share went down from 14 percent to 12 percent, and Palm’s webOS shrank from 10 percent to five percent.

On a global basis, the iPhone operating system now accounts for 50 percent of all mobile traffic, up from 43 percent the month before.

Android has an 11 percent global share, which makes it third globally after Nokia/Symbian’s 25 percent share.

Since Verizon launched the Droid about two weeks ago, Droids now make up 24 percent of all Android mobile Web traffic. The HTC Dream, which is the oldest Android device on the market, is the only Android device with more share, at 36 percent of Android traffic. Give it a few more weeks. The Droid is shaping up to be the most-popular Android device so far.

The data suggests that the BlackBerry, though a worthy enterprise device, continues to lag as a smartphone choice for users whose key applications lean to the Web.

Apple Creates iTunes Preview

While a strength of Apple's has always been ease of use, direct links to iTunes from a web browser have always annoyingly needed to boot up iTunes before a song could be checked out. Another strength of Apple's has been fixing things, and the simple solution they've created is iTunes Preview.


iTunes Preview works as a website that your browser will go to when you click on a direct iTunes link. The page you're taking to will have all the pertinent information to whatever song or album link you clicked on, from release information to pricing. The page will also have buttons to click on if you do want to open your iTunes and hear some previews or make a purchase.


Like cut and paste for the iPhone, it's been kind mind boggling that Apple didn't have something like this already, but at least it is out there now, helping to save computer processing speed the world over.

Apple lifts veil on App Store approval status

Apple has added a feature to its Dev Center website allowing developers to view the approval status of submitted apps.


In a move that is sure to please many, developers tell AppleInsider that Apple's Development Center website has added the ability for developers to track the status of apps currently under review. In the past, Apple had notoriously kept developers in the dark about Apple's review and approval process.

There are allegedly nine status levels for submitted applications, including "in review," "ready for sale," and "rejected".

While this update to the Dev Center website may not seem like a major change, it is a step in the right direction towards greater transparency and disclosure about the Application review process.

Some still remain unhappy about Apple's overall App submission process. Joe Hewitt, developer of the Facebook app for the iPhone told TechCrunch Wednesday that he has decided to stop developing for the platform, citing Apple's App Store policies. "I am very concerned that they are setting a horrible precedent for other software platforms," Hewitt reportedly said.

Earlier this year AppleInsider was told, "Many developers are pulling their hair out by the roots" over the approval process. Approvals that once took days were taking months and Apple's response to inquiry about the process was a stock answer or no received answer at all.

After weathering a storm of criticism by developers and pundits alike, Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing directly reached out to the developer community - sending personal responses to many of its high profile critics.

Apple Overtakes Nokia As Most Profitable Handset Maker

Apple has overtaken Nokia as the world’s most profitable handset vendor according to Strategy Analytics. TelephonyOnline reports that Nokia can still claim the largest global market share but Apple has overtaken in profits due to Nokia’s stagnant presence in the U.S. and the economic downturn. Strategoy Analytics estimates that Apple’s iPhone operating profit came in at $1.6 billion in Q3, while Nokia recorded only $1.1 billion in operating profit.

“With strong volumes, high wholesale prices and tight cost controls, the PC vendor has successfully broken into the mobile phone market in just two years,” said analyst Alex Spektor in the research note. It is not all bad news for Nokia.

Even with falling profits, it managed to capture 37.9% market share and ship 16.4 million handsets in the third quarter. Strategy Analytics said that focusing on the U.S., Apple’s high-profit home turf, will be the key to recovering in 2010, but that won’t be an easy fight. Nokia’s profit margin for its handset division has been shrinking during the entire 2009 global economic downturn, and the handset-maker is also facing increased pressure from Google Android devices and other new high-end smartphones planned for the rest of the year and into 2010.

Apple opens its first retail store in France

Today Apple opened its second store on mainland Europe at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, France. They don't stop there, however; another store in Montpellier, France opens next week on November 14th and one near the Opera Ganier to debut in the summer of 2010.

France's first Apple store opens today at 10AM CET. This is a prestigious location to be sure, right across the famous inverted pyramid inside the Louvre museum
. Just for that it would be worthwhile to visit this store, which spans two floors. 150 employees work in the store to offer the same services, which have made the Apple Store experience a success all over the world. The first 5000 visitors will receive a limited edition t-shirt.

This year, close to 170 million people visited Apple Stores on four different continents. Apple has already opened 277 stores in 10 countries: France, U.S., UK, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, Canada, Japan and China.

Apple TV 3.0 offers new interface


Apple has rolled out the Version 3.0 software for its Apple TV, offering a new user interface as well as new features including direct access to internet radio. A new update for iTunes software takes care of full interoperability.

The Apple TV 3.0 software comes complete with a redesigned main menu that helps in faster navigation. On demand HD movie buys and rentals, HD TV shows, music and podcasts have become more exciting with the brand new Version 3.0, according to Apple.

With the new version, iTunes Extras and iTunes LP can be enjoyed in fullscreen on the Apple TV; and Genius Mixes and internet Radio can be played back on a home theatre system. It comes with totally revamped user interface, making the set-top box experience much better than the earlier versions. The new menu also boasts of support for iPhoto Events and iPhoto Faces.

The iTunes Extras that have been added promises additional content such as deleted scenes, interviews and interactive galleries, while iTunes LP delivers “a rich experience for select albums on the iTunes Store,” such as live performance videos, lyrics, artwork, liner notes, interviews and images.

“The new software for Apple TV features a simpler and faster interface that gives you instant access to your favorite content,” Eddy Cue, Apple’s VP of internet Services, said in a statement.

“HD movies and HD TV shows from iTunes have been a huge hit with Apple TV customers, and with Apple TV 3.0 they get great new features including iTunes Extras, Genius Mixes andinternet radio.”

The iTunes 9.0.2 update adds Apple TV 3.0 support. The new Apple TV update might also kill unapproved software such as Boxee.

Apple Magic Mouse Hands On

The Apple's Magic Mouse doesn't have anything on its surface. It's an aluminum base topped off with a smooth multitouch panel. It felt weird to use, but leagues ahead of the Mighty Mouse. I may go back to mice.



The strange thing about the Magic Mouse is not how it works. It is that you have different gestures than on a standard Macbook Pro trackpad.

One obvious example: Since you move the cursor by moving the whole mouse with your hand, there's no point in also using one finger to move the cursor, like on the trackpad. Moving your finger on the surface of the Magic Mouse allows you to scroll in all directions, 360 degrees around.

You can also scroll with two or three fingers, if you move them up and down. But if you swipe them from side to side while using a web browser, your browsing history moves forward or back.

Physically, the mouse is beautiful, and feels nice. The top is made of white polycarbonate that matches the keys on Apple's keyboards. It is one seamless touch surface, and, logically, there is no Mighty Mouse scroll nipple.

The surface can also simulate the left and right buttons. Unlike in previous Apple's mice, the two buttons work perfectly. This time they also added physical feedback, so when you click the buttons, you actually get the entire surface to click—like the original clear Apple mouse.

The mouse runs on AA batteries, and Apple claims 4 months of use per set. You can get it with the new iMac or pay $69 separately.

Apple Earnings up on strong iPhone, Mac sales

Apple (AAPL) smashed market expectations for the September quarter with strong sales in its iPhone and Mac lines delivering increased profits.

Mac sales jumped 17% from the same quarter of 2008 to 3.05 million units, 250,000 units above market estimates. iPhone sales rose 7% to 7.4 million, just below the market expectation of 7.5 million units. Notably though Apple said that it was struggling to meet demand for iPhones globally, a suggestion that the figure may be limited by supply as opposed to demand.

Net profit rose to $1.67 billion/ $1.82 a share, up from from $1.14 billion/ $1.26 a share for the September quarter of 2008. The market had been expecting $1.42 a share. Revenue rose 25 percent to $9.87 billion. Gross margin of 36.6 percent, up from 34.7 percent a year ago.

The figures are a huge boost for Apple after many analysts had expected them to take a bigger hit due to the global financial crisis. Apple’s Mac line, still the biggest earner for the company has continued to steam ahead, despite of (or perhaps because of)its premium pricing.

AAPL shares rose 7.5% to $204 in after market trading,smashing its previous price high of $202.96 in December 2007.

Apple's App Store passes 2 billion downloads

Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch App Store has reached another milestone today as it was announced that over 2 billion apps have now been downloaded through the service. It was only in April of this year that the 1 billion mark was passed, nine months after the online store first launched.

The App Store now contains over 85,000 applications, in 20 different categories, which are downloaded by more than 50 million customers in 77 different countries, according to Apple. The apps themselves are created by more than 125,000 registered developers, who receive 70% of the revenue from their creations whilst Apple keep the other 30%.

"The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone," Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, said of the news. "The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it."

MediaMemo have put this into perspective, doing some calculations on the figures released by Apple. In the first year of the App Store 1.5 billion apps were downloaded, averaging at 4.1 million downloads per day. Since then the next 500 millions app downloads have occurred within 76 days, averaging at a huge 6.6 millions download per day. They also say that the paid-for apps generate estimated sales of $200 million per month; with Apple keeping their 30% of this, that equates to $720 million a year.

Apple's iTunes music store is still eclipsing the app store, however, with sales of songs recently passing the 8.5 billion mark. The iTunes Store is said to account for over 70% of online digital music sales worldwide and the App Store is said to be the biggest applications store in the world.

Apple launches App Store Resource Center to ease submissions

Apple has created a new section on its site dedicated to iPhone developers that documents important details about the iPhone submission process.

The new App Store Resource Center within Apple’s iPhone Dev Center site is now live, providing access to much needed information detailing the App Store submission process.

According to Apple’s e-mail communication dispatched to registered iPhone developers this past Friday, the new online content assists developers with submitting and managing their iPhone apps.

We finally see Apple addressing the mounting criticism aimed at the App Store application process. The new resource center is an important step towards making the application process less painful and more transparent. Frankly, one would have expected this resource center back in March 2008, when Apple first announced the iPhone SDK and created a comprehensive online destination for iPhone developers dubbed the iPhone Dev Center.

Although the iPhone Dev Center has been providing a myriad of invaluable content to would-be iPhone developers, important details about the submission process have never been made public until now. However, the most important piece of the puzzle is still missing - the review process policies. Until Apple publicly documents its internal policies that govern the iPhone review process, the company will be bashed heavily each time it rejects an app over dubious claims.

Apple sold 30 million iPhones, served 1.8 billion Apps, iTunes sold 8.5 billion songs

Apple CEO Steve Jobs arrived at the event was greeted with a long standing ovation from the audience. Speaking about his health experience in the past couple of years, Jobs credited his life to a man in his 20s who had died in a car crash, and was an organ donor. "I'm very happy to be here today with you all," he said, before thanking Tim Cook and his executive team for the support and how well they ran things in his absence.

Anyway, on to other things. The first revelations include that iPhone's new milestone; it has sold 30 million units in its two years of availability. It's dedicated App Store has 75,000 applications available for the device and has so far served a whopping 1.8 billion downloads. If updates were to be counted too, it would be "a few times higher," according to Phil Schiller.

The iPhone 3.1 OS is also ready, and includes among its features, a port of "Genius", which will now be used to recommend what application you might like. It will be available as a free download from today. The recent rumor about record labels offering pre-made ringtones is also true; over 30,000 pre-made ringtones will be available for $1.29 each.

As for iTunes, the store is now available in 23 countries and boasts more than 100 million accounts with credit card details. It has sold 8.5 billion songs since it was launched.

Apple unveiled the new iPod nano with upgraded capacities: 8GB and 16GB. Major new features include a video camera that can store H.264 video with a 640 x 480 at 30fps resolution and a larger 2.2-inch LCD with a 240 x 376 resolution (204 PPI). I’m not sure if you can use this video camera to take pictures.I’m guessing it does but there is no mention of it on Apple’s iPod nano site. Other things that are new:

  • Polished anodized aluminum finish

  • FM Tuner

  • Nine colors: Pink, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Grey, Silver

  • iTunes Tagging: Use the click wheel to tag the song and iTunes creates a list of all your tagged songs so you can preview or purchase them when you sync.

  • Live Pause: Want to pause the radio? Now you can. Rewind live radio? Sure, up to 15 minutes.

  • VoiceOver: Tells you the title and artist when you click the click wheel or on the new earphones with the controls and mic.

  • Voice Memos: There’s a built-in mic, of course, so you can record voice memos now.

  • Pedometer: Uses the built-in accelerometer to act as a pedometer and works with the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit.


If the iPod nano can only take videos, this is an interesting development. The nano can take videos but not pictures. The iPod touch can take pictures but not videos. The iPhone 3G can take pictures but not videos and the 3GS can take both pictures and videos. I’m guessing that soon enough Apple will make it so that all the next-generation iPod nano and iPod touch devices will be able to take photos and videos.
