Motorola, Microsoft in Deal to put Bing on phones

Motorola Inc has reached a deal with Microsoft Corp that will put Bing search and mapping services on its phones that use Google's
Android operating system.

Motorola said the partnership with Microsoft means that a Bing bookmark and search widget will be loaded on cell phones, starting in the coming weeks with phones in China.

The move follows shortly after Motorola struck a similar deal to let consumers in China use Baidu Inc, among others, as the default Web search instead of Google on Android based phones.

The partnerships come against a backdrop of Google's dispute with China over censorship, which, if it leads to Google withdrawing from the country, could cause big headaches for Motorola.

That's because Motorola is banking on its ties to Google's Android and its sales in China to help in a big turnaround effort. Having search alternatives on the Android phones should lessen Motorola's dependence on Google, in China or elsewhere, analysts have said.

Droid on track to sell 1 million by year end

Motorola and Verizon are on track to selling 1 million Droid phones by year end, a huge success for both companies. The company has sold between 700,000 and 800,000 units in the first month of its release, beating early predictions of only selling just over half a million in 2009.

The Droid runs on Android 2.0 from Google, which offers numerous feature list, including ones missing from the iPhone. Android 2.0 debuted on the Droid at the beginning on November, adding dozens of features over the previous version, including a new interface.

Droid had a $100 million marketing campaign push to help promote the new smartphone in the North American market, something that seems to have paid off. The Motorola Droid estimated to sell only 600,000 units by the end of 2009, but has already passed expectations.

Even though the Motorola Droid failed to beat iPhone sales, it managed to sell roughly 100,000 in the first two days; it didn't come near the estimated 1 million iPhone 3G and 3GS sold in their opening weeks.

The Droid and Android comes feature packed and includes a 3.7-inch multi-touch screen, sliding QWERTY keyboard, 5-megapixel camera, MicroSDHC support, an interchangeable battery.

Motorola Droid starts at $199.99 US, same retail price as the iPhone 3GS 16GB.

Verizon to announce Moto Tao next week?

First came the rumors. Then came the leaked images. And now, 3 all-knowing (conveniently unnamed) analysts have predicted that Verizon’s long awaited foray into Android will happen some time next week with the announcement of Motorola’s Sholes/Tao smartphone. The timing seems feasible, especially considering that Motorola is holding a MOTODEV Android-related press event next Tuesday, October 6 (WinMo 6.5 who?).

But, this is far from certain, folks. In fact, we have it on good word that Verizon retail employees have yet to train on Android, making a near term launch that much less likely. However, that does not rule out an announcement only like the recent Motorola CLIQ event.

Either way, the speculation is definitely heating up. Just this morning the friendly folks over at AndroidGuys have posted information suggesting the Tao (or whatever it will end up being called) will be released on December 1, just in time for the all-mighty holiday shopping bonanza. But the fun doesn’t stop there.

According to the super secret document that found its way to AndroidAndMe, the Tao will purportedly be the “world’s thinnest” slider QWERTY phone at 13.7mm thick. Yes, please! Other juicy tidbits include: a 3.7″ 16:9 touch screen display, 16GB built-in storage, 5MP camera with dual LED flash, full HTML browser with Flash support, and supposedly the next generation of Android, the big 2.0.

Here are the rest of the leaked specs:

  • OMAP3430 – 600 MHz ARM Cortex A8 + PowerVR SGX 530 GPU + 430MHz C64x+ DSP + ISP (Image Signal Processor)

  • Dimensions 60.00 x 115.80 x 13.70 mm

  • Weight 169 g

  • Battery Li-ion 1400 mAh.

  • Standby 450 hours, talk time 420 minutes

  • 3.7-inch touch-sensitive display with a resolution of 854×480 pixels, 16 million color depth. Physical screen size is 45.72 mm by 81.34 mm.

  • 512MB/256MB ROM/RAM

  • microSD / microSDHC expansion slot

  • Camera: 5.0 megapixel with autofocus and video recorder

  • Connectivity: USB2.0, 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, Wi-Fi

  • Operating System: Android 2.0 (with Eclair, no Motoblur)

  • Package Contents: Phone Motorola Sholes, battery, charger, USB cable, 8GB MicroSD memory card and other literature

Motorola Cliq Gets Release Date, Price

Motorola on Tuesday finally revealed the pricing and release details for its eagerly anticipated first foray into the world of Google Android: The Motorola Cliq will debut on T-Mobile on November 2 for new customers, but existing customers will can sign up as early as Oct. 19.

The forthcoming handset, which was first announced earlier this month at the GigaOm conference in San Francisco, will be priced at $199.99 with a two-year T-Mobile contract. Voice plans for the phone begin at $29.99. Data plans start at $24.99. "[T]he CLIQ's total cost of ownership over the course of a two year contract stacks up well vs. the competition," writes T-Mobile in a press release issued today.

The touchscreen smartphone is built around Motorola's Motoblur OS, a skinned version of Google Android. The software is largely centered around social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Motorola is widely expected to launch a second Android handset early next month. Codenamed Sholes, the device is rumored to be the first Verizon handset to utilize Google's open OS.

Motorola's Android CLIQ Arrives

At an event on Thursday, Motorola announced its very first Android based device - the Motorola CLIQ. The phone, which would be made for T-Mobile, marks Motorola's entry into the Android platform. Will this be enough to boost the company's sagging fortunes? We will find that out soon.

The CLIQ is a decent Android device complete with a HVGA touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard and all the other "standard" fare that includes WiFi, GPS and even a 3.5mm jack. The 5 megapixel, autofocus camera takes care of the imaging part. Specs wise, the phone matches the features offered by its competitors - namely the Samsung Galaxy i7500, HTC Hero and the HTC Magic. The recently announced HTC Tattoo might pose some competition to the CLIQ as well. However, that would only happen if the CLIQ ever makes it out of T-Mobile and is offered SIM free.

The CLIQ happens to be the first Motorola device to feature its new MOTOBLUR solution. MOTOBLUR manages and streams together updates to contacts, posts, messages, photos and more from sources including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Gmail, and work and personal e-mail. The feature then delivers these updates to the home screen in easy-to-view streams so there is no need to open and close different mobile applications to keep up with the latest content.

The phone will be released in the fourth quarter of 2009 and while its pricing hasn't been officially revealed, it is expected to hover around the $399 (Rs.20,000 approx.) mark.
